THE SOBREMESA COLLECTION
Sobremesa was created with the intention of “making a celebration of the everyday,” designer Laila Gohar says. “It’s about beauty and color and coming together with people that you love around the table."
New York-based food-artist Laila Gohar's collection for HAY celebrates the joys of hosting – from sourcing ingredients, to cooking, setting the table, and finally sitting down and enjoying the people around the table.

WHAT IS THE SOBREMSA COLLECTION?
The Sobremesa Collection includes brightly hued tableware such as porcelain serving bowls in a variety of sizes and tones, a hand-painted stoneware vase, jug, and cookie jar; beautifully embroidered pieces made of OEKO-TEX® linen, including an apron, a tablecloth, and napkins to go along with colourful placemats.
WHAT DOES SOBREMSA MEAN?
“Sobremesa’s a Spanish word – it means the time spent around the table after the meal is done,” Laila Gohar says. “For me, this is the most magical time around the table.”
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE COLLECTION?
The visual inspiration for the collection came from both objects Hay called out in Gohar’s studio when visiting, as well as primary colours.
The design collaboration started out with Laila Gohar and Co-founder of HAY Mette being at various dinner parties together. Here they slowly found that they shared a passion for hosting and gathering friends and family around a well-dressed table.
They wanted the collection to be joyous and playful; “The colours reminded me of a carnival atmosphere, or even elementary school on a day that was really fun,” Laila Gohar says.
“Basic and fun objects that people can use in their homes in their life every day - that’s what we wanted for this collection”, says Mette Hay.
WHO IS LAILA GOHAR?
Laila Gohar is a conceptual artist and chef who works with food as her artistic medium.
She creates immersive experiences that blur the line between performance and dining. Gohar was born in Egypt, where she grew up in a large family of passionate cooks and hosts.
She is now based in New York City where she works internationally, and is known for her high profile collaborations across art, design and fashion.
