We sat down with our HAY Sydney store manager, Jake Buijtendijk, to chat all things HAY and design in Sydney. Read on for his favourite local spots and designs from the HAY collection.
Before moving to Sydney in 2022, Jake studied marketing and management in his home country New Zealand.
When not working, you can usually find Jake out with friends for dinner or beach hopping. He also has strong interest in design and enjoys starting various DIY projects – a hobby he in his own modest opinion is "not qualified to do" – we don't agree.

Why did you join the HAY team?
It feels like such an exciting opportunity that I’m able to combine my professional life with a personal passion. HAY offers a fun and creative range of beautifully designed pieces and to be running the Sydney store together with the rest of the team, is a great experience every day.

Favourite local spots near the HAY Sydney store?
My favourite place to grab a drink with a friend in the area is Piccolo Bar. Tucked away in Potts Point, this little bar has a small amount of seating so get in early and make sure to try their French 75!

Favourite lighting design from the HAY collection?
The PC Table Lamp – there's not a doubt in my mind. It’s been a personal favourite of mine long before I knew I would be working at HAY. The large PC Table Lamp by Pierre Charpin is elegant and contemporary it its design. I have it myself and it’s a piece that will follow with me to my future homes.

Favourite furniture design from the HAY collection?
I have to say the entire Rey collection by the Swiss design talent Bruno Rey but especially the Rey Chair Bruno Rey’s original chair, despite being produced in the 70s, remains such a staple in European design.
HAY’s relaunch in collaboration with renowned furniture manufacturer Dietiker of an updated range of colours combined with this timeless design is the perfect marriage!

Favourite homewares from the HAY collection?
The Indian Steel Pitcher is a design I’ll never get tired of. Great for when having friends over for a dinner or to use as a vase of a casual styled bouquet.
